Doctor claims his team was denied access to the activist after admission, while the family alleges lack of transparency over medical reports.
July 18, 2026: Fresh questions have emerged over activist Sonam Wangchuk’s medical treatment after his wife sought to shift him from Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital, alleging a lack of transparency in his treatment and health reports. Wangchuk, who has completed 20 days of his indefinite hunger strike, was admitted to the hospital after being removed from Jantar Mantar by Delhi Police on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters, Dr. Nitin Dighe, who said he had been monitoring Wangchuk’s health throughout the hunger strike, claimed that neither he nor his medical team had been allowed to examine the activist since his admission. He also questioned the hospital’s claim that Wangchuk’s potassium level had dropped sharply, saying his own test conducted a day earlier showed a normal reading of 4.8. Dighe alleged that the hospital refused to share the latest medical reports with Wangchuk’s family and said he had collected another blood sample for testing at an independent laboratory.
Meanwhile, Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali D. Angmo, wrote to the Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital requesting his immediate discharge so he could be shifted to a hospital of the family’s choice. She alleged that the family had lost confidence in the hospital after being informed that his potassium level had fallen to 2.9 despite an earlier reading of 4.3, and claimed that neither digital nor physical copies of the medical reports had been provided. According to Dr. Dighe, the planned July 20 march to Parliament will continue as scheduled, with Wangchuk expected to participate if medically fit, or his wife leading the march in his absence.
