Top court grants relief to Congress spokesperson, says custodial interrogation not required in passport allegation case
May 1, 2026: The Supreme Court of India on Friday granted anticipatory bail to Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera in a case filed by the Assam Police. The case was registered following a complaint by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, over allegations related to multiple passports.
A bench of Justices J.K. Maheshwari and A.S. Chandurkar observed that the allegations and counter-allegations appeared to be politically motivated, noting that custodial interrogation was not necessary in the matter. The Court heard arguments from senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi representing Khera and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appearing for the Assam government.
After hearing both sides, the Supreme Court reserved its detailed judgment while granting interim protection to Khera. The case continues to draw political attention due to the nature of allegations and the involvement of high-profile figures from opposing political camps.
