Canada to Deploy More Resources to Combat Fentanyl Trafficking; Tariffs Suspended for 30 Days
Washington DC [US], February 4: US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that Canada has agreed to implement a $1.3 billion border security plan aimed at stopping the flow of fentanyl into the United States. In return, Trump stated that he would pause tariffs on Canadian goods for 30 days, allowing time for further negotiations on a broader economic agreement.
Trump: Canada to Secure the Border and End the Fentanyl Crisis
In a post on Truth Social, Trump emphasized the importance of securing the US-Canada border and praised the Canadian government’s new commitments.
“Canada has agreed to ensure we have a secure Northern Border, and to finally end the deadly scourge of drugs like fentanyl that have been pouring into our country, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans, while destroying their families and communities all across our country,” Trump wrote.
The US President also referenced a statement from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, detailing Canada’s border plan, which includes:
- Deploying new helicopters, technology, and personnel to enhance border security.
- Increasing coordination with US agencies.
- Allocating additional resources to stop the flow of fentanyl into the US.
“As President, it is my responsibility to ensure the safety of ALL Americans, and I am doing just that. I am very pleased with this initial outcome, and the tariffs announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30-day period to see whether or not a final economic deal with Canada can be structured. FAIRNESS FOR ALL!” Trump added.
Trudeau Confirms Canada’s New Border Security Commitments
Following Trump’s announcement, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed the details of the plan in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“I just had a good call with President Trump. Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan—reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology, and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border.”
Trudeau also announced additional measures:
- Appointing a “Fentanyl Czar” to oversee anti-drug trafficking efforts.
- Listing drug cartels as terrorist organizations to enhance law enforcement powers.
- Ensuring 24/7 border surveillance with advanced intelligence monitoring.
- Launching a Canada-US Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl smuggling, and money laundering.
- Signing a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl, backed by an additional $200 million in funding.
“Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together,” Trudeau wrote.
US Also Pauses Tariffs on Mexico Amid Border Security Talks
Earlier in the day, Trump also announced a temporary halt on tariffs on Mexican goods following discussions with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
As part of their agreement:
- Mexico will deploy 10,000 soldiers to the US-Mexico border to combat fentanyl trafficking and illegal migration.
- Officials from both countries will engage in high-level negotiations on security and trade policies.
Conservative Leaders Push for Canadian Military Deployment
Following the US-Mexico deal, some conservative politicians in Canada called for the federal government to deploy military forces to the US-Canada border, according to CBC News.
Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, urged Trudeau to:
“Send Canadian Forces troops, helicopters, and surveillance to the border now to save the Canada-US trade relationship and address Donald Trump’s concerns about drugs and migrants.”
As negotiations continue, the 30-day tariff pause marks a critical window for both Canada and Mexico to demonstrate enhanced security efforts while working toward a broader trade and border agreement with the US.
