Grand Theft Auto 6 is finally just a few months away from its massive debut. However, PC gamers will have to wait much longer than those on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X. Rockstar Games traditionally launches its titles on consoles first, and GTA 6 follows this exact pattern.

Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, recently explained why they made this choice. He calls console users the “core consumer” for a release of this size. Therefore, the studio prioritizes these players to ensure the game meets the highest expectations at launch.
Serving the Core Audience
In a recent interview, Zelnick discussed the incredible pressure surrounding the new game. He noted that while PC sales can account for nearly half of a major title’s revenue, consoles remain the primary focus. Rockstar believes they must serve their most loyal audience “first and best” before expanding to other platforms.

Interestingly, Zelnick confirmed that this decision is not part of a special marketing deal with Sony. Instead, it is simply how the studio has operated for decades. By focusing on consoles initially, they can polish the experience for a specific set of hardware before tackling the complexities of PC development.
A History of Delayed PC Ports
History shows that Rockstar often waits months or even years to bring their hits to computers. For example, Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on consoles in 2018 but didn’t reach PC until a year later. GTA 5 followed a similar path, moving from older consoles to newer ones before finally arriving on PC in 2015.

Sometimes, these gaps are much larger. The original Red Dead Redemption took 14 years to finally arrive on PC. While this delay might frustrate some, it often allows Rockstar to add better graphics and new features to the PC version. Consequently, most experts expect a PC release for GTA 6 sometime in 2027.
Launch Details and Future Expectations
GTA 6 officially launches on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X on November 19, 2026. Zelnick seems very confident in this staggered release strategy. He believes the game will find its audience regardless of the wait.

Although skipping a PC launch on day one carries some financial risk, it often creates a “second wind” for sales later on. For now, computer players can only watch and wait as the console era of GTA 6 begins. Most fans agree that the eventual PC version will likely be the definitive way to play.
