Tech giant Apple has unveiled a significant environmental expansion in India, committing a ₹100 crore investment into renewable energy infrastructure. This move is part of a broader suite of initiatives including plastic waste recovery and support for green startups designed to propel the company toward its ambitious goal of being carbon neutral across its entire global supply chain and product life cycle by 2030.
Apple also revealed that it has already slashed its global greenhouse gas emissions by over 60% since 2015, even as its revenue surged by 78% in the same period.
Powering India with CleanMax and WWF
In a strategic partnership with CleanMax, a leading Indian renewable energy developer, Apple aims to facilitate over 150 megawatts of new renewable energy capacity. The initial ₹100 crore injection is expected to generate enough clean electricity to power approximately 1.5 lakh Indian households annually.
This collaboration follows Apple’s previous success in implementing rooftop solar projects that already power its Indian offices and retail stores. Furthermore, Apple is teaming up with WWF-India to expand plastic waste recovery models in regions like Goa and Coimbatore, focusing on traceable recycling to prevent leakage into local ecosystems.
Mentoring the Next Generation of Green Entrepreneurs
Beyond infrastructure, Apple is investing in human capital through a new partnership with Acumen. This initiative will support six early-stage green enterprises specializing in circular economy solutions, regenerative agriculture, and waste management. Selected startups will receive grants, technical assistance, and strategic mentorship to help them scale. Notable examples of ventures benefiting from this ecosystem include Saptkrishi, which focuses on low-cost farm storage, and Mowo Fleet, an organization empowering women to enter the electric vehicle (EV) sector as drivers and entrepreneurs.
A Vision for 2030: Innovation and Supply Chain
Sarah Chandler, Apple’s Vice President of Environment and Supply Chain Innovation, emphasized that these investments are a testament to the company’s long-term commitment to India’s clean energy economy. By expanding its focus beyond its own operations and deep into its supply chain and local communities, Apple is positioning India as a key hub for its global sustainability mission. The company’s “2030 Carbon Goal” remains the North Star for its engineering and supply chain decisions, ensuring that every product manufactured in India contributes to a greener global footprint.
