"Dhoni is a great captain": Ajit Agarkar on data versus human

During a recent episode of the SportifywithPRG podcast, Indian men’s team chief selector Ajit Agarkar lauded MS Dhoni’s unparalleled leadership abilities.

Dhoni, known for his instinctive approach to cricket, has a storied career as the only captain to win all ICC white-ball championships—the T20 World Cup (2007), the Cricket World Cup (2011), and the Champions Trophy (2013). Currently, Dhoni continues to lead Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL, a team he has guided to five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 victories.

Agarkar highlighted the modern reliance on data and artificial intelligence in cricket, noting the extensive use of analytics to strategize and plan for matches. While data plays a critical role in modern cricket, providing detailed insights into player performances and potential game plans, Agarkar emphasized that it does not supplant the need for human judgment and on-the-spot decision-making.

“The amount of data available is incredible. You can plan entire innings around it. In the IPL, teams meticulously use data to target specific weaknesses of batsmen. However, not everything goes according to plan, and that’s where you need a captain’s instinct,” Agarkar explained.

He further elaborated on the unique qualities that set Dhoni apart as a captain. Dhoni’s ability to read the game and adapt quickly to changing circumstances, according to Agarkar, exemplifies why he is considered one of the greatest captains in cricket history. “That’s why MS Dhoni is revered as a great captain. His feel for the game and ability to anticipate changes on the field are instinctual. Like in international trade, it’s about having a finger on the pulse, knowing when to stick to the plan and when to innovate,” Agarkar said.

This blend of high-level data analysis complemented by Dhoni’s seasoned instincts underscores the dynamic nature of cricket, where data-driven strategies and human insights intersect to shape the outcomes of the game. Agarkar’s comments reflect a broader respect for Dhoni’s legacy as a leader who masterfully balances strategic planning with intuitive gameplay.
