Actor Swara Bhasker has shared her views on the limited support from Bollywood for climate activist and educator Sonam Wangchuk during his ongoing hunger strike. Speaking after visiting Wangchuk at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, Swara suggested that fear of repercussions may have discouraged many celebrities from publicly expressing their support.
‘People May Be Afraid to Speak’
In an interview with The Lallantop, Swara said that some members of the film industry may be hesitant to voice their opinions due to concerns about facing similar consequences to those she believes she has experienced.
However, she clarified that she does not wish to judge individual actors for choosing to remain silent.
‘A Cause Doesn’t Need Celebrity Validation’
Swara also stressed that social movements should not rely on celebrity endorsements to gain importance or credibility. According to her, public causes remain significant because of the issues they represent, regardless of whether public figures choose to support them openly.
‘This Is About My Daughter’s Future’
Speaking about her own decision to support the protest, Swara said the issue is deeply personal.
She stated that she wants her daughter to grow up, study and build a future in India, adding that the protest concerns the country’s future and the opportunities available to the next generation.
Sonam Wangchuk Hospitalised
Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to a hospital on Saturday after his health reportedly deteriorated during his indefinite hunger strike. According to reports, the move was made following medical advice and directions from the Delhi High Court.
Wangchuk has been on an indefinite fast since June 28 in support of a protest over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and the reported deaths of students linked to the controversy.
