Joker: Folie à Deux' Unveils Musical Sequel with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga

The first trailer of ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ was rolled out yesterday. This 2:25 minute trailer looks absolutely phenomenal. The film appears to be pure art and is shot in the typical ‘Joker’ filming style- with a lot of grey, steel, rain and umbrellas.

Breaking away from the last film though, the story-telling for the sequel will be as a musical and it is expected to include 15 numbers. According to Variety, most songs will be covers of pre-existing songs.

The hugely famous song ‘That’s Entertainment’ sung by Judy Garland in the 1953 musical ‘The Band Wagon’ will also feature in the movie. The trailer features the 1965 song ‘What the World Needs Now Is Love’.

The sequel has Oscar winners Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga as the main lead. Phoenix had also won an Oscar for the first ‘Joker’ film released in 2019.

The storyline has Phoenix return as Arthur Fleck, the titular aspiring stand-up comedian turned villain, and Lady Gaga as Dr Harleen Quinzel, a psychiatrist assigned to treat Fleck at Arkham Asylum, who falls in love with him and becomes his accomplice Harley Quinn.

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ the title of the film takes from the French phrase “madness of two” — or “folly of two,” a term commonly used to describe a psychological disorder in which two individuals with strong ties share in a similar delusion.

The film also stars Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Steve Coogan and Catherine Keener and is directed by Todd Phillips.

The trailer has already created a lot of buzz on the Social Media and fans cannot stop gushing about it.

In a post on X, a user expressed, “Joaquin Phoenix is destined to win another Oscar for this.” Another user commented, “There’s no denying it, this trailer is absolutely phenomenal. I’m incredibly excited for this one.”

‘Joker’ made box office history when it was released in 2019, becoming the first R-rated film ever to gross over USD$1bn. It won the Golden Lion at the Venice international film festival and was nominated for 11 Oscars, winning two.

Joker: Folie à Deux will be released in cinemas on 4 October.
