A 27-year-old model, Rhiya Ahir, has become one of the most talked-about faces of the recent student protests in Mumbai after she stood in front of a police van carrying detained demonstrators, demanding their immediate release.
Videos and images of Ahir blocking the police vehicle near Shivaji Park quickly went viral, drawing widespread attention to her act of protest.
What Happened
According to a report by Hindustan Times, Ahir said she was walking towards Shivaji Park around 4:30 pm when she spotted a police van packed with detained protesters. Believing they were being taken away unnecessarily, she ran towards the vehicle and stood in front of it. She said the chants of the protesters compelled her to act, and that she couldn’t ignore what she was witnessing.
Ahir said she had a tense exchange with police officers, who reportedly told her the detainees would be released once the van had moved some distance away. She questioned why they couldn’t simply be released on the spot if that was truly the plan, saying the officers’ lack of a clear explanation felt like an unspoken admission that something had gone wrong.

Despite appearing composed, Ahir admitted she was scared during the standoff and was shaking internally. She stayed in front of the van until police eventually released the detained protesters, several of whom thanked her afterward — with some jokingly calling her “a baddie.”
Reflecting on her decision, Ahir said she acted on instinct, fearing that if the protesters were taken away, they could remain in custody and face FIRs. She described it as her responsibility as a citizen, adding that she would have felt like she failed herself had she not stepped in.
Sharing the moment on her Instagram, Ahir wrote a pointed caption questioning the police’s next move after detaining the students.
