India’s boxing team has encountered an unexpected setback at the start of its Commonwealth Games 2026 campaign. Nearly half of the contingent’s luggage failed to arrive in Glasgow after the team travelled from a preparatory training camp in Belfast.
The 22-member Indian boxing squad reached Glasgow on Tuesday. However, several athletes were left without their training equipment and ceremonial outfits after their baggage was delayed.
Several Indian Boxers Affected by Missing Luggage
Among those affected are Sakshi Chaudhary (51kg), reigning world champion Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Parveen Hooda (65kg), Jadumani Singh (55kg), Kapil Pokhariya (90kg), and men’s head coach C. Kuttappa.
According to team members, the problem occurred because the aircraft operating the short Belfast-to-Glasgow route had limited baggage capacity. As a result, several bags could not be loaded onto the flight.
The missing luggage contains training gear, personal belongings, and the ceremonial uniforms that athletes are expected to wear during the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on Thursday.
Second Baggage Delay During the Tour
This is not the first time the Indian boxing contingent has faced such an issue during its overseas tour.
Earlier this month, the team also experienced baggage delays while travelling from Doha to Belfast. The repeated logistical problems have disrupted the athletes’ preparations during an important phase of the competition.
With the boxing events beginning on Friday, the team is hoping the missing luggage reaches Glasgow as soon as possible so the athletes can complete their final training sessions without further inconvenience.
Accommodation Issue Adds to Team’s Concerns
Apart from the baggage delay, the Indian contingent has also raised concerns over accommodation arrangements.
Reports suggest that the women’s boxing coach has not been accommodated in the same hotel as the athletes. Although officials are expected to address the issue, the situation has added to the team’s early challenges before competition begins.
Glasgow Hosts a Scaled-Down Commonwealth Games
Glasgow stepped in as the host city after Australia’s Victoria state withdrew from hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games because of rising costs.
As a result, this year’s edition has been significantly scaled down. Only 10 sports are being contested, making it the smallest Commonwealth Games programme since the 1994 edition.
The competitions will take place across four venues:
- Scottish Event Campus (SEC)
- Glasgow Arena
- Scotstoun Stadium
- Tollcross International Swimming Centre
Despite the smaller scale, organisers are expecting larger crowds once competition officially begins later this week.
Local Residents Expect Activity to Pick Up
Preparations around Glasgow continue as athletes from different countries arrive in the city.
University of Glasgow student Nathan MacKenzie said he only became aware of the Games after volunteers were recruited on campus. He added that public interest has started growing only recently as promotional material appeared across the city.
Taxi driver Vincent Dobbins also believes the atmosphere will improve once more athletes and fans arrive.
According to him, there has been limited excitement so far, but the city is expected to become much livelier as the Games get underway.
Indian Boxers Focused on Competition
Despite the travel disruptions, India’s boxing team remains focused on the task ahead. The contingent is waiting for the delayed luggage to arrive before the opening ceremony and the start of the boxing competition on Friday.
The athletes will hope the logistical issues are resolved quickly so they can concentrate entirely on their medal campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026.
