Government says the previous OBC list was politically motivated and that the new legislation will enable preparation of a revised reservation list.

June 29, 2026: The West Bengal Assembly on Monday passed two Bills by voice vote to abolish the existing Other Backward Classes (OBC) list used for reservations in state government jobs. The move marks a significant change in the state’s reservation framework and is aimed at preparing a fresh OBC list under a revised process.

According to the government, the earlier OBC list was prepared during the previous Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) administration. It alleged that the list was created on political considerations rather than objective criteria, making it necessary to replace it with a new and transparent classification.

The government said the newly passed Bills will pave the way for a revised OBC list that will be used for reservation in state government recruitment. The decision is expected to reshape the implementation of OBC reservations in West Bengal and may have a significant impact on future recruitment policies.
