Heavy rainfall continued to lash Maharashtra, triggering drowning incidents, landslides, transport disruptions

July 6, 2026: A 10-year-old boy was swept away by the swollen Kamvari River in Bhiwandi while disposing of household garbage, marking the second drowning in the river within 24 hours. In Pune’s Maval tehsil, one person died after a landslide buried a house, while National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams continued searching for two others feared trapped under the debris. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds until Tuesday morning.

The Maharashtra State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) advised private offices in Mumbai to allow employees to work from home wherever possible and directed non-essential government offices to function on a half-day schedule. Citizens have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel. Heavy rain also triggered a landslide near Tunnel 2 on the Pune-Mumbai Connecting Link Road, leading to traffic diversions. Meanwhile, train services between Mumbai and Pune were suspended after landslides in the Bhor Ghat section, with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw monitoring restoration efforts.

Authorities also announced the closure of schools across Pune district and all government, private and civic-run schools and colleges in Mumbai as a precaution. Earlier, six people, including four children, lost their lives after a multi-storey chawl structure collapsed in Mumbai’s Mankhurd amid incessant rain. Similar school closures were ordered in Thane and Navi Mumbai as civic authorities remained on high alert to deal with the continuing monsoon emergency.
