A bailey bridge built under the PMGSY was destroyed in an alleged IED blast in Manipur’s Kamjong district
July 22, 2026: Unidentified persons allegedly blew up a bailey bridge built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in Manipur’s Kamjong district on Wednesday, police said. The bridge, constructed over the Namban Lok River between Phange and Chatric villages, was reportedly destroyed using improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Police said the bridge served as the only road link connecting Chatric and nearby villages with the district headquarters, leaving several areas cut off after the blast.
Police received information about the incident at around 9.30 am and launched an investigation. Authorities said the identity of those responsible and the motive behind the attack remain unknown. In a separate incident, a telecom vehicle parked near the Namban Lok River was also set on fire. Police described both acts as deliberate attacks on public infrastructure intended to disrupt transportation, communication services and public movement while creating fear among residents.
A suo motu case has been registered at Chassad Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Officials noted that the latest incidents come amid continuing tensions in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts, which have remained volatile since February. The security situation further deteriorated after the May 13 twin ambushes in Kangpokpi and Noney districts that claimed four lives, including three church leaders and one Naga man.
