Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal says major issues in the India-US trade agreement have been resolved

June 1, 2026: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday expressed confidence that the first tranche of the India-US bilateral trade agreement will be signed soon. Speaking at a press conference, he said that most major issues have already been resolved and discussions are now in the final stages. Goyal noted that both countries had agreed on the framework of the deal earlier this year and that only a small portion of the negotiations remains pending.

The minister’s remarks came as a US delegation prepared to visit India from June 2 to 4 for discussions aimed at finalising the agreement. The American delegation will be led by Brendan Lynch. Meanwhile, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor recently stated that 99 percent of the trade pact had already been completed. He described the proposed agreement as one that would unlock economic opportunities and strengthen trade ties between the two countries.

Goyal also said the agreement would address tariff-related issues between India and the United States. India had faced a combined 50 percent tariff imposed by the US, including levies linked to trade concerns and India’s purchase of Russian oil. Following the trade framework announced in February 2026, the US proposed reducing tariffs on Indian goods to 18 percent. The minister added that the final agreement would take into account legal and policy changes affecting tariff structures in Washington.
