July 22, 2026: The Lok Sabha on Wednesday suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee for the remainder of the ongoing Monsoon Session over allegations that he used unparliamentary language against a woman member of the House. The action followed a complaint filed by former TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar to Speaker Om Birla, in which she accused Banerjee of repeated verbal abuse and misogynistic behaviour inside Parliament. Banerjee has denied the allegations, calling them fabricated and questioning why the matter was not raised immediately during the House proceedings.
The controversy comes amid a widening political split within the TMC. Ghosh Dastidar resigned from all party organisational posts in May, the same day Banerjee was appointed the party’s Lok Sabha chief whip. She later joined a group of 20 rebel MPs who aligned with the newly formed Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI). The Speaker recently allowed the rebel MPs to sit separately in Parliament, although their formal merger with the NCPI is still awaiting approval. Banerjee had opposed the separate seating arrangement, arguing that disqualification petitions against the rebel MPs were still pending.
This is not the first time Banerjee has faced scrutiny over his conduct in Parliament. Earlier, members of a Joint Parliamentary Committee examining the Waqf Bill accused him of disruptive behaviour after he broke a glass bottle during a heated exchange, leading to demands for disciplinary action. He was also suspended from a JPC meeting in January 2025 over alleged unparliamentary remarks. Ghosh Dastidar has maintained that her complaint reflects a repeated pattern of behaviour and called for strict action to ensure dignity and respect for women lawmakers.
