The veteran Trinamool Congress leader resigned from key party posts, joined the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee
July 15, 2026: Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Kamarhati MLA Madan Mitra joined the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee on Wednesday after resigning from several key organisational posts in the Mamata Banerjee-led party. Announcing his decision, Mitra said he was stepping down as a member of the national working committee, chief whip in the Assembly, and general secretary of the party. While describing his move as “changing rooms,” he blamed TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee for the party’s growing internal crisis.
Mitra’s decision came a day after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned his wife and two sons for questioning in connection with an alleged recruitment corruption case linked to the Kamarhati Municipality. He denied any connection between the ED action and his political decision, stating that his family would cooperate with the investigation. Rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee welcomed Mitra’s entry, saying it strengthened the group’s campaign against what he described as “family-controlled politics” within the party.
Criticising Abhishek Banerjee, Mitra alleged that the party had become centered around one individual and warned that such leadership would weaken the TMC’s ability to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He also recalled raising corruption allegations within the party earlier and thanked Mamata Banerjee for supporting him over the years. The Mamata Banerjee-led faction had not officially responded to Mitra’s resignation and defection at the time of reporting.
