Senior Trinamool Congress leader Madan Mitra has resigned from the party and announced his decision to join a rebel faction
July 15, 2026: Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and former minister Madan Mitra has resigned from the party and announced that he has joined a rebel Trinamool Congress faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee. Mitra said he has stepped down from all party positions, although he will continue to serve as an MLA for the time being. His exit comes amid reported internal divisions within the party and follows a series of defections in recent weeks.
Announcing his decision, Mitra said he had severed all organisational ties with the Trinamool Congress and aligned himself with the breakaway faction. He described his resignation as a complete break from the party leadership, adding that he no longer considers himself a Trinamool MLA in the functional sense despite retaining his Assembly membership.
Mitra also sharply criticised Abhishek Banerjee, claiming he had advised him to step away from the party leadership temporarily to allow time for rebuilding the organisation. According to Mitra, the suggestion was rejected, prompting him to question the party’s direction and leadership. He appealed to Mamata Banerjee to view the political situation as a long-term contest while expressing disappointment over what he described as the party’s current priorities.
