The Mahayuti alliance secured 16 of the 17 Maharashtra Legislative Council seats, with the BJP emerging as the biggest winner

June 22, 2026: The ruling Mahayuti alliance scored a decisive victory in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections, winning 16 of the 17 seats for which results were declared on Monday. The BJP emerged as the biggest beneficiary with 11 seats, while the Shiv Sena led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde secured three seats and the NCP headed by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar won two. Six Mahayuti candidates had already been elected unopposed before polling, strengthening the alliance’s position even before voting took place.

Among the candidates elected unopposed were Ravindra Phatak and Dushyant Chaturvedi from Shiv Sena, Aniket Tatkare and Vikram Kakade from NCP, and Arun Lakhani and Prajakt Tanpure from BJP. Several BJP candidates also secured victories across key constituencies, further consolidating the party’s dominance in the Council. Shiv Sena candidate Saiyed Khan won from Parbhani-Hingoli, adding to the alliance’s tally.

The only setback for Mahayuti came in Nashik, where Independent candidate and BJP rebel Gokul Gite defeated Shiv Sena nominee Narendra Darade. The result sparked criticism from Opposition leaders, who alleged growing tensions within the ruling alliance. Meanwhile, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) failed to win any seat, with leaders claiming they contested the elections to defend constitutional values despite the disappointing outcome.
