Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Indonesia visit is expected to strengthen cooperation in trade, defence
July 5, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Indonesia is being viewed as a key opportunity to deepen one of the Indo-Pacific’s most strategically important partnerships. As two of the region’s largest democracies, major maritime powers, G20 members and leading voices of the Global South, India and Indonesia share strong historical and strategic ties. However, despite growing diplomatic engagement, bilateral trade remains around $30 billion, with significant scope for expansion in investment, supply chains and economic cooperation.
The visit follows Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to India earlier this year, during which both countries marked 75 years of diplomatic relations and signed agreements in healthcare, digital cooperation, maritime security and cultural exchanges. Modi’s visit is expected to focus on converting these agreements into concrete outcomes by expanding collaboration in digital public infrastructure, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, healthcare, education, governance and critical minerals. Indonesia’s vast nickel reserves also present opportunities for Indian companies to invest in processing facilities and strengthen supply chains for electric vehicles and advanced manufacturing.
Maritime security and defence cooperation are also expected to feature prominently during the visit. With Indonesia located near the strategically vital Strait of Malacca, both nations aim to enhance naval cooperation, defence manufacturing and technology partnerships. The visit is also expected to encourage greater business engagement, academic exchanges and investment, reinforcing a long-term partnership focused on economic resilience, regional stability and sustainable development across the Indo-Pacific.
