Mamata Banerjee met Sonia Gandhi at the latter’s residence, 10 Janpath, in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The meeting lasted for nearly an hour, beginning at around 4 pm and concluding shortly before 5 pm, according to a Trinamool Congress MP. Although neither side officially disclosed the details of the discussion, the meeting has drawn significant political attention amid ongoing efforts to strengthen opposition unity under the INDIA bloc.

Meeting Comes After Warm Interaction at INDIA Bloc Gathering

The meeting took place a day after Mamata Banerjee and Sonia Gandhi shared a warm interaction during an INDIA alliance meeting held at the Constitution Club in New Delhi.

A Trinamool Congress leader pointed to the cordial exchange between the two leaders as a sign of growing unity within the opposition alliance. According to the MP, the embrace between Sonia Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee reflected a common commitment to keeping the INDIA bloc united ahead of future political challenges.

The interaction has fueled speculation about closer coordination among opposition parties as they prepare for upcoming electoral battles.

Poll Rigging Concerns Reportedly Discussed in Opposition Meeting

During the INDIA bloc meeting on Monday, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi reportedly raised concerns regarding the conduct of recent elections in different states.

According to reports, Rahul Gandhi said that Tejashwi Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav were partly convinced that electoral irregularities had affected previous elections in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Rahul Gandhi also reportedly stated that Mamata Banerjee was highly convinced that recent elections in West Bengal had witnessed similar issues. Furthermore, he said that he was completely certain that electoral manipulation had taken place.

However, these claims remain political allegations, and no official findings supporting such assertions were discussed publicly during the meeting.

Congress and Trinamool Relations Also Under Discussion

Sources within Congress indicated that the discussions between Sonia Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee may have included the political relationship between the two parties.

The Trinamool Congress was formed in 1998 after Mamata Banerjee split from the Congress. Despite their complicated political history, both parties have worked together on several opposition initiatives in recent years.

Therefore, the meeting is being viewed as an important step in maintaining coordination within the broader opposition alliance.

CID Action in Kolkata Sparks Political Controversy

While the Delhi meeting was underway, a separate political controversy unfolded in Kolkata.

Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien alleged that officials from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) entered the party headquarters in Kolkata at the same time Mamata Banerjee was meeting Sonia Gandhi.

In a post on social media platform X, Derek O’Brien claimed the timing of the CID action was politically motivated. He accused authorities of targeting political opponents and questioned the state of democratic institutions.

CID Probe Linked to Forged Signature Allegations

The CID visit was connected to an ongoing investigation into allegations involving forged signatures of Trinamool Congress MLAs.

Officials from the state investigating agency, accompanied by personnel from the Kalighat Police Station and women police officers, arrived at the party’s central office located on Harish Chatterjee Street in Kolkata.

The agency is investigating claims related to forged signatures and related documents. However, authorities have not publicly linked the investigation to the political developments in New Delhi.

Opposition Politics in Focus

The meeting between Mamata Banerjee and Sonia Gandhi comes at a crucial time for opposition politics in India. As parties within the INDIA alliance seek greater coordination, interactions between senior leaders are likely to attract close scrutiny.

Although details of the discussion remain confidential, the meeting has reinforced perceptions of continued engagement between the Congress and Trinamool Congress leadership.

With debates over election transparency, opposition unity and political investigations continuing to dominate the national conversation, the developments in both Delhi and Kolkata are expected to remain under close watch in the coming days.
