The digital transformation of Telangana’s transport sector is yielding significant results as the VAHAN portal sees a massive influx of users. Since its phased rollout across the state, the portal has successfully processed permanent registrations for over 79,000 vehicles out of 89,392 total applications. This shift marks a major milestone in the state’s effort to modernize vehicle services and reduce the need for physical visits to Regional Transport Offices (RTOs).

Phased Rollout and System Stability

Developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), the VAHAN portal was introduced in stages to ensure a seamless transition for citizens. Transport Commissioner K Ilambarithi noted that this phased approach has been instrumental in maintaining system stability. By avoiding sudden disruptions, the department has been able to manage a high volume of requests, including 3,223 fancy number bookings, which have become increasingly popular among new vehicle owners.

HSRP and Finalizing the Registration Process

For a vehicle registration to be considered complete under the new system, specific protocols must be followed. Once a permanent registration number is assigned, vehicle dealers are required to install High Security Registration Plates (HSRP). Following the installation, photographs of the vehicle with the plates must be uploaded to the VAHAN portal. Only after these steps are verified can the Registration Certificate (RC) be generated online, completing the legal documentation for the owner.

Enhanced Transparency in Fancy Number Auctions

One of the standout features of the VAHAN implementation in Telangana has been the online fancy number booking system. By moving the auction and booking process to a digital platform, the Transport Department has significantly improved transparency and fairness. This has eliminated the traditional hurdles associated with physical bidding, making it easier for citizens to secure their preferred numbers. Authorities plan to continue adding features to the portal, further expanding the range of digital services available to the public.
