Tejashwi Yadav has raised questions over the Bharat Tiwari encounter
July 2, 2026: Political tensions have intensified in Bihar over the police encounter of Bharat Tiwari, with Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav alleging that the operation was carried out with the knowledge or approval of senior members of the state government. He questioned the role of the Home Department and sought clarity on whether the Chief Minister was aware of the encounter. The state government has denied the allegations, and no official evidence has been presented to support the claims.
The controversy deepened after the transfer of SDPO Rajesh Sharma, who had earlier been removed from his post following questions over the encounter. After being attached to the police headquarters, Sharma has now been posted to the Prohibition Department. The opposition has accused the government of shielding officials instead of ensuring accountability, while BJP leader Nagmani defended the police action and called for a thorough investigation to establish the facts.
Amid the political row, the proposed Bahujan Mahapanchayat, scheduled for July 5 to protest the government’s handling of the case, has been postponed. The event had gained political attention after Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi announced his participation. With both the ruling alliance and the opposition trading charges, the Bharat Tiwari encounter continues to remain a major political issue in Bihar.
