The Trinamool Congress expelled eight senior leaders, including Firhad Hakim and Arup Roy
June 23, 2026: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday expelled eight senior leaders, including Firhad Hakim, Arup Roy, Javed Ahmed Khan, Rathin Ghosh, Biplab Mitra, Sabina Yasmin, Aroop Biswas and Snehasis Chakraborty, for allegedly engaging in anti-party activities. The action came shortly after the party issued show-cause notices to the leaders amid an escalating internal power struggle. TMC also moved to replace Firhad Hakim as Chief Whip in the West Bengal Assembly, nominating MLA Madan Mitra for the post.
The disciplinary action followed the formation of a parallel leadership structure by a rebel faction led by West Bengal Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee. During a special session, the group announced Arup Roy as Chairperson of the All India Trinamool Congress and constituted a 30-member National Working Committee. The faction also named Firhad Hakim and Aroop Biswas as vice-chairpersons, claiming the new committee represented the party’s future direction.
Defending the move, Ritabrata Banerjee said the appointments were made unanimously by party delegates and stressed that Mamata Banerjee should continue to serve as the party’s mentor. He also questioned the legitimacy of decisions taken by the rival camp during a National Working Committee meeting chaired by Mamata Banerjee. The developments mark a major escalation in the organisational crisis within the ruling party, with both camps now staking claim to the party’s leadership and future.
