Former Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy resigned from the TMC and Parliament
June 8, 2026: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) faced fresh political turbulence on Monday after several leaders associated with the party were seen at the residence of Union Minister Bhupender Yadav in New Delhi. The development coincided with an INDIA bloc meeting attended by TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and other opposition leaders at the Constitution Club. Former Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, who resigned from the party earlier in the day, was among those present. Several other leaders, including Prasun Banerjee, Jagdish Basunia, Kali Pada Soren, Arup Chakraborty, Abu Taher, Asit Mal, Dr Sharmila Sarkar and Khalilur Rahman, were also seen at the meeting. Neither the BJP nor the TMC issued an immediate statement on the purpose of the gathering.
The political development came amid growing signs of unrest within the TMC. Earlier in the day, veteran parliamentarian Sukhendu Sekhar Roy resigned from both the party and the Rajya Sabha. His exit came just hours before the INDIA bloc meeting attended by Mamata Banerjee and TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. The resignation followed reports of internal dissent within the party, including claims that several TMC legislators had backed Ritabrata Banerjee over the party’s official choice for a key opposition post in the West Bengal Assembly.
Explaining his decision, Roy alleged that corruption had become widespread within both the government and the party organisation. He also renewed his criticism of the TMC’s handling of the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case, claiming he was sidelined after demanding an internal inquiry into the role of certain police officers. Roy alleged that attempts were made to shield those responsible and said the controversy marked a turning point in his relationship with the party. He further claimed that honest voices were being marginalised within the organisation and called for greater scrutiny of the assets and finances of leaders holding important positions.
