The Minnesota Twins continued their impressive run of form with a dramatic 6-5 victory over the Cleveland Guardians at Target Field on Wednesday night. The biggest hero of the game was outfielder Alan Roden, who delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Roden, who had been waiting more than three months for another opportunity in the Major Leagues, made the most of his chance. His game-winning hit gave the Twins another important win in the race for the American League Central title.
Alan Roden Makes Instant Impact After Call-Up
Roden’s journey back to the Major League roster was not easy.
He narrowly missed making the Twins’ Opening Day squad during Spring Training because of a crowded roster and the fact that he still had Minor League options. Although he performed well at Triple-A St. Paul, a shoulder injury delayed his return and cost him several chances to earn a promotion.
However, his opportunity finally arrived this week after the Twins placed star outfielder Byron Buxton on the injured list with a strained right hip.
Roden was called up on Tuesday, and within a day, he became the match-winner.
Walk-Off Single Seals Dramatic Victory
The Twins entered the bottom of the ninth inning looking for one final push.
Kody Clemens started the rally with an infield single before Josh Bell struck out. Next, Royce Lewis beat out a potential double-play ball, keeping Minnesota’s hopes alive.
Soon after, Alex Jackson added an infield single, while Luke Keaschall drew a walk to load the bases.
With two outs and the game on the line, Roden stepped up to the plate. He smashed a line drive off the wall in right-center field, allowing the winning run to score and sending the home crowd into celebration.
The clutch hit also marked Roden’s second RBI of the game after he had earlier produced a game-tying single in the fourth inning.
Twins Continue Their Winning Momentum
The victory extended Minnesota’s winning streak to four games.
Moreover, the Twins have now won eight of their last 11 games and 14 of their previous 21 contests. They have also claimed victory in four consecutive series and have won seven of their last eight series.
As a result, Minnesota moved within one game of the Cleveland Guardians for second place in the American League Central standings. The team now trails the division-leading Chicago White Sox by two games.
Pitching Staff Holds Off Cleveland
Minnesota’s pitching staff also played an important role in the victory.
Starter Connor Prielipp delivered five solid innings and kept the Guardians’ offense under control. After his outing, five relievers combined to protect the Twins and prevent Cleveland from building a bigger lead.
Reliever Yoendrys Gómez earned the win after another effective appearance out of the bullpen. His recent performances have strengthened Minnesota’s relief unit and become a key reason behind the team’s strong run of form.
With Roden making an immediate impact and the pitching staff continuing to perform, the Twins have built valuable momentum as they push for a higher position in the American League Central.
