Croatia’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion after a dramatic VAR decision ruled out what appeared to be a last-gasp equaliser against Portugal. The controversial call not only sealed Croatia’s exit from the tournament but also sparked chaotic scenes inside the stadium, as frustrated supporters threw bottles and cans onto the pitch in protest.
The incident unfolded deep into stoppage time during Portugal’s thrilling 2-1 victory in the Round of 32 clash in Toronto. With Portugal leading through Gonçalo Ramos’ dramatic 94th-minute winner, Croatia launched one final attack. Defender Josko Gvardiol bundled the ball into the net, sending Croatian players and fans into wild celebrations as they believed they had forced extra time.
However, the celebrations were short-lived. After a lengthy VAR review, the referee disallowed the goal for offside. Replays showed that Igor Matanović had made a slight touch before the ball reached Mario Pašalić, who was in an offside position and involved in the attacking move. As a result, Gvardiol’s goal was ruled out, leaving Croatia stunned.
The decision triggered angry reactions in the stands. Sections of Croatian supporters began throwing bottles and cans onto the field, forcing a brief stoppage as stadium staff and security cleared the debris. Veteran winger Ivan Perišić was seen approaching the travelling fans in an attempt to calm the situation and prevent further disruption.
The dramatic finish capped off a thrilling encounter. Ivan Perišić had earlier given Croatia the lead before Cristiano Ronaldo equalised from the penalty spot. Ramos then struck a stoppage-time winner, and although Gvardiol briefly reignited Croatian hopes, the VAR decision proved to be the final twist, sending Portugal into the Round of 16.
