Renowned cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle has criticised the recent speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma’s ODI future, saying the rumours have created an unnecessary distraction and could negatively affect the Indian team.

His remarks came after reports suggested that the ongoing ODI series against England, particularly the third match at Lord’s, could mark Rohit Sharma’s final appearance in the 50-over format.

Bhogle Questions Retirement Reports

Reacting to the speculation on X, Harsha Bhogle described the situation as harmful to both the team environment and Indian cricket.

He wrote that the sequence of an alleged leak followed by an official clarification was “damaging to Indian cricket and the atmosphere in the team.”

BCCI Dismisses Retirement Rumours

The speculation gained momentum after reports claimed that the Indian selectors and team management were already planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup and were considering moving on from the 39-year-old captain.

However, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia firmly denied the reports, stating that there had been “no discussion whatsoever” about Rohit Sharma’s retirement or the Lord’s ODI being his farewell match.

Saikia also reiterated that Rohit continues to be an important member of India’s ODI setup.

Rohit’s Current Form

The retirement rumours surfaced after Rohit’s modest performances in the opening two ODIs against England, where he scored 11 and 26 runs.

Despite the recent lean patch, the veteran opener remains one of India’s most experienced players in the format.

Focus Remains on ODIs

Having already retired from T20 Internationals and Test cricket, One Day Internationals are now the only international format in which Rohit Sharma continues to represent India.

With the BCCI publicly backing the skipper, Bhogle’s comments have also reignited the debate over the impact of unverified reports and speculation on the dressing-room environment during an ongoing international series.
