Indian sprinting witnessed a historic moment in Ranchi as Gurvinder Singh stormed to a sensational 10.09-second finish in the men’s 100m at the Federation Cup 2026, reclaiming the national record and sealing qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The dramatic run came just a day after fellow sprinter Animesh Kujur had broken Gurvinder’s freshly set national mark in a remarkable sequence of events at the Birsa Munda Stadium.

“Task Is 10.10”: Gurvinder’s Message Before Historic Sprint

Before stepping onto the track on Saturday, the 25-year-old Punjab athlete had already made his intentions clear.

Displayed on the back of his shirt was the message:

“Task is 10.10, not finished yet. Wait I am still standing.”

Moments later, Gurvinder delivered on that promise with one of the greatest sprint performances in Indian athletics history.

His timing of 10.09 seconds not only restored his national record but also comfortably secured qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

National Record Broken Three Times In Two Days

The Federation Cup in Ranchi turned into a landmark event for Indian sprinting.

On Friday:

  • Gurvinder Singh clocked 10.17 seconds in the heats to set a new national record.
  • Barely five minutes later, Animesh Kujur broke it again with a timing of 10.15 seconds.

However, Gurvinder responded emphatically on Saturday with his stunning 10.09-second sprint.

In an extraordinary two-day period, India’s men’s 100m national record was broken three separate times.

Gurvinder’s Journey From Punjab Fields To National Glory

Hailing from Patiala in Punjab, Gurvinder comes from a farming family and began his sprinting journey running through fields in his village.

His rise through Indian athletics has been built on years of dedication and disciplined training.

Currently, Gurvinder trains under coach James Hillier, while his former coach Sarabjit Singh continues to play an important role in his development.

Speaking to NDTV, Sarabjit Singh revealed that Gurvinder had predicted the achievement beforehand.

“For quite some time, he had been telling me that his timings were looking very good. He had even written a target of under 10.10 seconds behind his chest number. And he achieved it,” the coach said.

He added that Gurvinder believes this milestone is only the beginning of his journey.

Indian Sprinting Enters Exciting New Era

Indian athletics fans are now beginning to dream bigger than ever before.

With both Gurvinder Singh and Animesh Kujur consistently lowering sprint timings, India’s men’s 100m scene is entering an exciting phase ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Kujur, often referred to as India’s “Usain Bolt,” had emerged as one of the headline athletes at the Federation Cup. However, Gurvinder’s remarkable comeback performance ensured he finished the event as the biggest talking point.

Earlier in 2025, Gurvinder had also entered the record books during the Indian Grand Prix after clocking 10.20 seconds in the 100m.

Now, with a new national record of 10.09 seconds, the Punjab sprinter has firmly established himself as one of India’s fastest-ever athletes.
