The FIFA World Cup 2026 has set a new financial benchmark in international football, with the tournament’s total prize money reaching a record USD 871 million. The amount marks a significant 65% increase compared to the prize pool offered during the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The massive increase in financial rewards comes as FIFA expands the tournament format to 48 teams and 104 matches. According to official distribution details, the rise is supported by record commercial revenues and FIFA’s increased investment in global football development.

The total prize pool includes a performance-based allocation of USD 655 million, representing a major increase from the USD 440 million distributed during the 2022 edition. Along with performance rewards, every participating nation will receive a guaranteed financial package regardless of their results in the tournament.

Each of the 48 participating teams is assured a minimum payment of USD 12.5 million, which includes a USD 10 million qualification fee and USD 2.5 million in preparation funding. The structure ensures that all teams benefit financially from their participation in football’s biggest global event.

The performance-based rewards will increase as teams progress through the tournament. Teams eliminated during the group stage will receive USD 9 million, while those reaching the Round of 32 will earn USD 12 million. Round of 16 teams will receive USD 16 million, and quarterfinalists will secure USD 19 million.

The biggest financial jump comes in the final stages of the competition. The fourth-place team will earn USD 27 million, the third-place finisher will receive USD 29 million, and the runners-up will collect USD 33 million in performance payouts. The FIFA World Cup 2026 champions will take home USD 50 million in performance prize money.

When combined with the guaranteed base amount and preparation funding, the tournament winners are expected to earn more than USD 63.5 million — the highest prize payout for a FIFA World Cup champion in history. This is reportedly USD 8 million more than what the Qatar 2022 champions earned.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is being hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. With an expanded format, increased financial rewards, and a larger global audience, the tournament is expected to become the biggest edition of the competition to date.

In addition to prize money, FIFA will provide further support through delegation cost contributions and ticketing allocations, aimed at helping smaller football federations manage expenses during the expanded tournament.
