The integrity of international cricket has been shaken as the International Cricket Council (ICC) officially launched a probe into Cricket Canada following explosive match-fixing allegations.
According to reports released on Friday, April 17, 2026, the investigation centers on alleged breaches of the ICC’s anti-corruption code during the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
The controversy gained momentum following a documentary titled Corruption, Crime and Cricket by the Canadian investigative program The Fifth Estate, which suggested that irregular activities occurred at both international and domestic levels.
A specific point of interest for the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) is an over bowled by Canadian captain Dilpreet Bajwa during a group-stage match against New Zealand in Chennai.
While defending a total of 173, Bajwa brought himself into the attack for the fifth over after his bowlers had built significant pressure. The over in question cost 15 runs and was marred by a no-ball and a delivery down the leg side that resulted in two wides. The documentary suggests the sudden shift in momentum and the nature of the extras have raised red flags regarding the “spot” in question.
Beyond on-field conduct, the probe is investigating deep-rooted administrative issues within Cricket Canada. The ICC is reviewing a recorded telephone call involving former coach Khurram Chohan, who alleged he was pressured by board members to select specific players and claimed there were active attempts to fix matches. Furthermore, another former coach, Pubudu Dassanayake, alleged he faced threats of contract termination for refusing to manipulate squad selections as far back as the 2024 T20 World Cup. These claims suggest a systemic issue within the board’s leadership that may have compromised the national team’s performance.
