The conflict between the United States and Iran intensified after the US launched a fresh wave of military strikes targeting multiple locations in southern Iran following an alleged attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation began at 7:15 p.m. Washington time on the orders of President Donald Trump after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) allegedly attacked the Cyprus-flagged container ship M/V GFS Galaxy in the strategic waterway.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth defended the operation, stating, “Iran made a poor choice. Now they pay.”

Iranian media reported explosions in Bandar Abbas, Sirik and Chabahar as the strikes unfolded. Additional attacks were later reported in the southern Khuzestan province, where the cities of Hendijan, Mahshahr and Abadan were reportedly hit by what Iranian authorities described as “enemy projectiles.”

The latest US operation reportedly targeted missile sites, drone bases, radar installations and air defence systems as part of an effort to weaken Iran’s military capabilities and its ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed that the crew of the M/V GFS Galaxy abandoned the vessel and evacuated to a lifeboat after the attack. CENTCOM said the ship suffered a fire and extensive engine room damage, leaving it unable to continue its voyage, while one civilian crew member remains missing.

Iran’s official IRNA news agency also reported more than 10 explosions in the southern port city of Jask in Hormozgan province, though authorities have not released details regarding casualties or the extent of the damage.

The renewed military action follows Iran’s decision to once again close the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest energy shipping routes, further escalating regional tensions and raising concerns over global oil supplies and maritime security.

The latest exchange of military action has further weakened the already fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, with diplomatic efforts facing increasing uncertainty as both sides continue military operations.
