Before stepping onto the field for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) high-voltage clash against Mumbai Indians in Raipur, Virat Kohli found himself captivated by a historic performance unfolding over 1,100 kilometers away in Chennai.
During a brief hydration break in his pre-match warm-up at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, the RCB icon was spotted on the dugout television, completely “glued” to the screen as young Urvil Patel tore the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) bowling attack to shreds.
The viral footage showed Kohli pausing his routine to admire a record-breaking feat: the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) youngster raced to a half-century in just 13 deliveries, equalling Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 2023 record for the fastest fifty in IPL history.
Patel, drafted into the XI as a replacement for the injured Ayush Mhatre, walked in at No. 3 and immediately unleashed a “six-hitting storm,” becoming the first player in league history to smash six sixes within the first eight balls of an innings. His ruthless assault included targeting India veteran Mohammed Shami and taking Avesh Khan for three consecutive maximums.
Urvil eventually finished with a staggering 65 runs off 23 balls, a knock decorated with eight towering sixes and a strike rate of 282.61. Beyond the fireworks, the innings also provided one of the most emotional moments of the season.
Upon reaching his milestone, Patel pulled a note from his pocket that read, “This is for you, Papa,” dedicating the record to his father. While Jamie Overton took the Player of the Match honors for his 3/36, it was Urvil’s “fearless intent” that secured a five-wicket win for CSK and earned the silent respect of modern legend Virat Kohli.
