Mumbai Indians are facing an anxious wait over the fitness of captain Hardik Pandya ahead of their crucial IPL 2026 clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur on Sunday.
The high-stakes encounter could play a major role in shaping the playoff race this season. While RCB currently sit comfortably in the top four and are strongly placed to qualify for the playoffs, Mumbai Indians are fighting to stay alive in the competition and cannot afford many more setbacks.
Hardik Pandya missed MI’s previous match against Lucknow Super Giants after suffering a back spasm, and his participation against RCB remains uncertain.
Providing an update on the all-rounder’s condition, Mumbai Indians said, “Hardik Pandya continues to be evaluated by the medical team, and they will inform the team on his progress. Suryakumar Yadav is coming tomorrow.”
According to a report by Cricbuzz, there was never any concern regarding Suryakumar Yadav’s availability for the match, despite the star batter not travelling with the squad to Raipur earlier in the week.
Suryakumar had stayed back after he and his wife Devisha Shetty welcomed a baby girl on Thursday. Sharing the news on Instagram, the India T20 captain wrote, “With giggles, bows, and dreams to unfurl — we welcome our baby girl.”
The Mumbai Indians batter had captained the side in their previous outing against Lucknow Super Giants in Hardik’s absence. His return is expected to provide a major boost to MI ahead of the must-win encounter against RCB.
Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bengaluru used their time in Raipur to connect with the culture and traditions of Chhattisgarh ahead of the game.
RCB, who played their first five home matches at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, are set to host their remaining two “home” fixtures of IPL 2026 at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur due to prior commitments.
Ahead of the clash, the RCB squad attended a cultural expo showcasing Chhattisgarh’s local cuisine, tribal heritage, music, dance, and art forms.
RCB captain Rajat Patidar said the experience left a strong impression on the team.
“I really liked it, especially when we entered and they played traditional music with drums while people were dancing. We also got to learn about the tribal communities here and their history, which was really special,” Patidar said.
With playoff pressure mounting and both teams carrying significant momentum and expectations, the MI vs RCB contest in Raipur is shaping up to be one of the most important matches of the IPL 2026 season.
