Spain’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026 final against Argentina suffered an unexpected setback on Saturday after severe weather forced the team to suspend its outdoor training session in New Jersey.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed that the session at the Melanie Lane Training Ground was halted in line with the United States’ storm safety protocols after thunderstorms and lightning moved into the area.

The players were immediately shifted indoors, where they continued their warm-up exercises. However, there was no immediate confirmation on whether Spain would resume outdoor training later in the day.

“The Spanish national team’s training session on the pitches at the Melanie Lane Training Ground in New Jersey has been suspended in accordance with the US storm safety protocol,” the Spanish federation (RFEF) said in a statement.

“The players are currently taking part in a warm-up session indoors.”

Severe Weather Warning Issued in New Jersey

The disruption came as New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill warned residents about a spell of severe weather expected to affect the state on Saturday.

Authorities cautioned that the storms could bring damaging winds, large hail, flash flooding and even isolated tornadoes, prompting organisers to follow strict safety guidelines for outdoor sporting activities.

Argentina, who are also based in the same region ahead of Sunday’s final, have been monitoring the weather as both teams complete their final preparations for football’s biggest match.

Argentina Eye Fourth Title, Spain Chase Historic Triumph

The FIFA World Cup 2026 final will see defending champions Argentina attempt to retain the trophy and secure their fourth World Cup title.

Led by Lionel Messi, Argentina booked their place in the final after producing a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England in the semi-finals. After trailing at half-time, Enzo Fernandez restored parity before Lautaro Martinez scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to send the reigning champions into another World Cup final.

Spain, meanwhile, reached the final for the first time since lifting the trophy in 2010 after defeating France 2-0 in a disciplined semi-final performance.

The reigning European champions are now aiming to become world champions once again, while Argentina hope to become the first team in more than six decades to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup title.

With the weather threatening to disrupt final preparations, both teams will be hoping conditions improve before they meet in what promises to be one of the biggest matches in world football.
