A massive new expressway project in Uttar Pradesh could soon make road travel between Delhi-NCR and the Nepal border significantly faster and smoother. The proposed Shamli-Gorakhpur Expressway is expected to reduce travel time to nearly eight hours, dramatically improving connectivity between western and eastern Uttar Pradesh while also strengthening access to neighbouring regions like Bihar and Nepal.

The ambitious infrastructure project is expected to cost nearly Rs 40,000 crore and stretch across approximately 742 kilometres.

New Expressway Could Transform Delhi-Nepal Road Connectivity

The upcoming Shamli-Gorakhpur Expressway is being designed as a high-speed corridor connecting multiple districts across Uttar Pradesh. Once completed, the route is expected to make long-distance travel from Delhi-NCR to the Nepal border much more efficient and convenient.

The project is also expected to improve transportation links for travellers heading towards Bihar and eastern India.

NHAI Divides The Project Into Two Major Sections

According to reports, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has divided the project into two major sections to ensure faster execution and better project management.

The eastern portion, covering around 394 kilometres, is reportedly being handled by the NHAI East Region team, while the western section of approximately 348 kilometres is under the supervision of the NHAI West Region team.

Authorities are also currently engaged in large-scale land acquisition across several districts of the state for the development of the expressway.

Which Areas Will The Expressway Connect?

The expressway will reportedly begin near the Haryana border and move through the Haridwar region in Uttarakhand before extending towards Kushinagar near the Bihar border.

Several districts across Uttar Pradesh are expected to benefit from the corridor, including:

  • Shamli
  • Muzaffarnagar
  • Saharanpur
  • Bijnor
  • Moradabad
  • Rampur
  • Bareilly
  • Pilibhit
  • Shahjahanpur
  • Lakhimpur Kheri
  • Sitapur
  • Bahraich
  • Shravasti
  • Balrampur
  • Sant Kabir Nagar
  • Gorakhpur
  • Kushinagar

The route is expected to strengthen both passenger and freight movement across northern India.

Expressway Expected To Boost Economy And Tourism

Apart from reducing travel time, the expressway is also expected to provide a major economic boost to the region. Improved road infrastructure often attracts industries, creates employment opportunities, and increases tourism activity in connected areas.

Experts believe the corridor could significantly improve logistics efficiency and promote commercial growth across districts that currently lack high-speed connectivity.

The project may also benefit tourism by making religious, cultural, and border destinations more accessible for travellers.

Four-Lane Corridor With Future Expansion Plans

The Shamli-Gorakhpur Expressway will initially feature a four-lane main carriageway. However, several key infrastructure components, including bridges, flyovers, and railway overbridges, are reportedly being constructed with six-lane capacity to accommodate future traffic growth.

Strategically planned exit ramps will also improve connectivity to nearby towns and local roads.

According to reports, the full expressway corridor is expected to become operational by the end of 2030.
