Pakistan: In a devastating escalation of violence in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, at least 15 police personnel were killed and three others injured late Saturday night.
The tragedy unfolded when a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the Fateh Khel police checkpoint in Bannu. The blast was so powerful that it completely leveled the structure, trapping several officers under the rubble and causing significant damage to civilian homes in the surrounding area.
Rescue Operations and Identification of Victims
Search and rescue teams worked tirelessly through the night under the threat of potential follow-up militant ambushes. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sajjad Khan confirmed that while three officers were pulled alive from the debris, the majority of those stationed at the post did not survive.
The slain personnel have been identified as Rehmat Ayaz, Sanaullah, Niaz Ali, Habib, Saadullah Jan, Kamran (son of Khan Sikandar), Kamran, Noorullah, Abid Jani, Imran, Kaleemullah, Sadiqullah, Munir Alam Khan, Rahatullah Khan, and Farooq. The injured officers—Mujrim Feroz, Hayatullah, and Qadarullah—are currently receiving treatment at the District Headquarters Hospital.
Widespread Destruction and Government Reaction
The intensity of the explosion sent shockwaves across the district, with eyewitnesses reporting that the roofs of nearby houses collapsed due to the sheer force of the blast. K-P Chief Minister Sohail Afridi issued a statement strongly condemning the cowardly act, describing it as an attack on the state’s resolve. Local authorities have placed the region on high alert as they investigate the logistics behind the vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) used in the assault.
Rising Insurgency Across the Region
This attack comes amidst a surge in militant activity across Pakistan’s border regions. Separately, the Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF) claimed responsibility for a series of ten operations targeting Frontier Corps posts and military convoys in Kharan, Washuk, and Mastung. While the Bannu attack specifically targeted the police, the broader pattern of violence highlights a deteriorating security situation as various groups ramp up their strikes against security forces and infrastructure projects throughout the country.
