New PLA Navy video showcasing blue-water ambitions hints at a possible nuclear-powered fourth aircraft carrier

April 25, 2026: A newly released video by the People’s Liberation Army Navy has sparked fresh speculation about China’s expanding maritime ambitions, particularly the possibility of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Titled “Into The Deep,” the video was unveiled to mark the navy’s 77th anniversary and highlights China’s transition from coastal defence to a powerful blue-water force capable of operating in distant oceans.

The footage features symbolic references to China’s existing aircraft carriers—Liaoning, Shandong, and Fujian—but also introduces a new name, “He Jian.” Analysts suggest the term hints at nuclear propulsion, as “He” resembles the Chinese word for nuclear. Satellite images from Dalian further indicate that a large new vessel is under construction, possibly comparable in size to the USS Gerald R. Ford.

China has steadily expanded its naval capabilities, commissioning Fujian in 2025 with advanced electromagnetic launch systems. While all its current carriers are conventionally powered, a nuclear-powered vessel would mark a major leap in endurance and global reach. With rising tensions and increasing presence in regions like the Indian Ocean, analysts believe Beijing may accelerate its carrier programme to rival global naval powers.
