Abelardo De La Espriella, a conservative lawyer and businessman who openly aligned himself with U.S. President Donald Trump and other right-wing leaders in the Americas, has won Colombia’s presidential election after a closely fought contest against progressive candidate Iván Cepeda.

Official election results showed that De La Espriella secured 49.7 per cent of the vote, narrowly defeating Cepeda, who received 48.7 per cent. The margin of victory stood at approximately 251,000 votes.

The 47-year-old political newcomer, who had never previously held elected office, is set to assume the presidency on August 7 for a four-year term.

Iván Cepeda Concedes Defeat After Tight Race

According to reports, Cepeda accepted the result on Wednesday after initially waiting for a recount process to conclude.

Addressing supporters after conceding defeat, the progressive leader pledged to serve as a responsible opposition voice.

“We assume with serenity, responsibility, and absolute resolve, and let there be no doubt about it, the role that circumstances demand of us,” Cepeda said.

“We will exercise a democratic, vigilant and constructive opposition.”

The closely contested election highlighted the deep political divisions within Colombia, with voters split between continuing the progressive agenda of outgoing President Gustavo Petro and embracing a tougher conservative approach championed by De La Espriella.

Voters Reject Petro’s ‘Total Peace’ Strategy

Political analysts view the result as a significant setback for President Gustavo Petro and his administration’s signature “total peace” policy.

The strategy sought to negotiate with multiple armed groups operating across Colombia in an effort to reduce violence and bring long-running conflicts to an end. However, critics argued that the policy failed to deliver meaningful security improvements and allowed criminal organisations to strengthen their influence.

Growing public concerns over crime, violence, economic uncertainty and dissatisfaction with the government’s performance played a major role in shaping the election outcome.

Tough-On-Crime Agenda Helped Drive Victory

Throughout the campaign, De La Espriella positioned himself as a law-and-order candidate, promising a more aggressive response to criminal organisations and armed groups.

His proposals included the construction of mega-prisons, expanded security operations and tougher measures against gangs and insurgent groups.

The campaign frequently drew comparisons with the policies of El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, whose hardline security crackdown has gained international attention.

Supporters argued that Colombia needed a stronger response to rising insecurity, while critics warned that some of the proposed measures could raise concerns about civil liberties and human rights.

From Celebrity Lawyer To President

Born in Bogotá in 1978 and raised in Córdoba, De La Espriella built his reputation as one of Colombia’s most recognisable defence lawyers.

Over the years, he represented politicians, business leaders and several controversial public figures, helping establish a strong public profile long before entering politics.

Despite campaigning as an outsider, he has maintained longstanding relationships with influential conservative figures, including former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe.

His rise to the presidency has not been without controversy. Opponents have pointed to his previous legal work and alleged associations with individuals linked to paramilitary groups. However, supporters view him as a leader capable of restoring stability, strengthening security and attracting investment back into the country.

Strong Alignment With Trump, Bukele And Milei

Nicknamed “The Tiger,” De La Espriella holds both Colombian and U.S. citizenship and has frequently expressed admiration for several prominent conservative leaders.

Among those he has praised are Donald Trump, Nayib Bukele and Javier Milei.

On foreign policy, he has advocated:

  • Stronger ties with the United States
  • Enhanced cooperation with Israel
  • A tougher regional security strategy
  • Policies aimed at improving investor confidence

His election is expected to reshape Colombia’s diplomatic and economic priorities while bringing the country closer to conservative governments across the region.

What His Victory Means For Colombia

De La Espriella’s victory marks one of the most significant political shifts in Colombia in recent years.

After a period dominated by Gustavo Petro’s left-leaning administration, voters have now opted for a conservative leader promising tougher security measures, economic reforms and stronger international partnerships.

The result is likely to be closely monitored across Latin America, where growing concerns over crime, economic pressures and political dissatisfaction have contributed to the rise of outsider candidates and right-leaning movements.

Global investors, regional governments and international observers will now be watching closely to see how De La Espriella translates his campaign promises into policy once he takes office in August.
