While the US-Iran peace agreement has ended 15 weeks of conflict

June 16, 2026: Questions are being raised about the effectiveness of the recent US-Iran peace agreement signed after 15 weeks of conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. When the war began in February, US President Donald Trump outlined several key goals, including regime change in Iran, dismantling its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, weakening its military infrastructure and limiting support for regional armed groups. However, critics argue that many of these objectives have not been achieved despite the signing of the agreement.

One of the major goals repeatedly highlighted by Trump was political change in Iran. Yet, throughout the conflict, no significant public uprising emerged, and Iran’s leadership remained firmly in control. Concerns also persist regarding Iran’s nuclear programme, as the agreement reportedly leaves issues related to enriched uranium stockpiles and sensitive nuclear facilities to future negotiations. Similarly, Iran’s ballistic missile programme, which Washington and Israel had sought to eliminate, was not included in the final framework.

The agreement also contains no clear commitments regarding Iran’s support for groups such as Hezbollah, the Houthis and allied factions operating across the region. Although the Strait of Hormuz has reopened after disruptions during the conflict, Iran has indicated it will continue strengthening its oversight of the strategic waterway. The war, which began on February 28 and ended with a peace deal announced on June 15, concluded without fully resolving several of the issues that initially prompted military action, leading critics to question whether the conflict achieved its intended outcomes.
