Canadian PM says Vaisakhi reflects values of service, justice, and community as Sikh contributions are celebrated nationwide.

April 14, 2026: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted the significant contributions of the Sikh community while addressing a Vaisakhi gathering in Ottawa. He described the festival as a moment to reaffirm values such as justice, charity, and service, adding that Sikh Canadians have played a key role in building the nation through enterprise, achievement, and seva. He noted that their contributions are not only a matter of community pride but also a fundamental strength for Canada.

The remarks came during an event marking Sikh Heritage Month and the launch of the short film “Promises,” which honours Sikh soldiers’ contributions during the Second World War. Across Canada, home to over 750,000 Sikhs, Vaisakhi celebrations were held with enthusiasm, including the 47th Khalsa Day Nagar Kirtan organised by the Khalsa Diwan Society in Vancouver.

Celebrations also extended to the Greater Toronto Area, where India’s diplomatic mission organised events in Brampton in collaboration with community groups. Officials, including High Commissioner Dinesh Patnaik and Consul General Mahavir Singhvi, emphasised the strong cultural ties between India and Canada. Vaisakhi, which commemorates the founding of the Khalsa Panth by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699, continues to inspire generations with its message of courage, faith, and unity.
