Authorities push eviction drive for environmental protection as displaced squatters plan nationwide agitation
April 30, 2026: Authorities in Kathmandu have ordered residents living along riverbanks and on illegally occupied land to vacate the area before Friday, as part of a large-scale demolition drive. The Kathmandu District Administration Office issued a notice stating that all unauthorised structures on public land and riverbanks will be removed starting at 7 am. The move is aimed at urban beautification and environmental protection.
The eviction drive has already led to the demolition of more than 1,500 settlements in areas along the Bagmati River, including Thapathali, Gairigaun and Sinamangal. Around 900 displaced families have been temporarily relocated to shelters such as Dasharath Stadium and facilities in Kirtipur and Balaju. Officials have said that verified landless families will be provided alternative housing after proper assessment.
However, squatters have criticised the government for carrying out evictions with little notice and inadequate rehabilitation arrangements. The All Nepal Landless Squatters Association has announced a three-week protest, including rallies, public meetings and a nationwide strike starting May 21. Protesters are also demanding the resignation of Balendra Shah, alleging that the eviction drive is against the interests of common people.
