United States Citizenship and Immigration Services ramps up scrutiny, warns of strict action against fraud and violations

April 20, 2026: The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has issued a fresh warning to Green Card holders, announcing stricter action against fraud and criminal violations. A Green Card, officially known as a Permanent Resident Card, allows foreign nationals to live and work indefinitely in the United States as lawful permanent residents. The agency now says it is expanding enforcement efforts and revisiting previously approved cases.

USCIS Director Joseph Edlow stated that the administration is increasing oversight, including reviewing older applications—especially those approved in recent years. The agency is also adding new special agents and launching tip lines to report suspected immigration fraud, working closely with enforcement partners like U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Officials have made it clear that even past violations could face renewed scrutiny.

The move signals a tougher stance on eligibility and compliance. Edlow emphasized that financial self-sufficiency remains a key criterion for obtaining and retaining a Green Card, warning that individuals who rely heavily on public resources may face consequences. The crackdown reflects broader enforcement priorities aimed at tightening immigration controls and ensuring adherence to legal requirements.
