The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) continues to grow, with confirmed cases reaching 452, according to the latest report from the country’s Health Ministry.

Officials said the outbreak has caused 82 deaths so far. At present, 258 patients are either receiving treatment in hospitals or remain in isolation. Meanwhile, eight people have successfully recovered from the disease.

The latest figures highlight the ongoing challenge facing health authorities as they work to contain the spread of the virus.

71 New Cases Reported in One Day

Health officials confirmed 71 new Ebola cases on Thursday alone. Most of the new infections were recorded in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu.

The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. Authorities reported that transmission is continuing within communities, raising concerns about further spread in affected regions.

As a result, response teams are increasing surveillance and monitoring efforts in high-risk areas.

Major Challenges Hindering Response Efforts

Despite ongoing efforts, several obstacles are slowing down the response.

Health authorities identified resistance to post-mortem testing in some communities as a key issue. In addition, treatment facilities remain limited and lack standardized resources in several locations.

Contact tracing efforts also face difficulties. Furthermore, shortages of medicines and infection-prevention supplies are creating additional pressure on healthcare workers, especially in North Kivu.

Another major concern is funding. Officials estimate that the response effort currently faces a financial gap of approximately $21.5 million.

Uganda Reports Additional Ebola Cases

The outbreak is not limited to the DRC.

Uganda’s Ministry of Health confirmed three new Ebola cases on Friday. Consequently, the country’s total number of confirmed infections has risen to 19.

Health authorities in the region remain on alert as they monitor possible cross-border transmission.

Africa CDC and WHO Unveil Continental Response Plan

In response to the growing threat, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) announced a joint preparedness and response strategy on Friday.

The plan aims to strengthen outbreak detection, improve emergency response capabilities, and support affected countries across Africa.

To achieve these goals, the organizations are seeking $518 million in funding. The initiative will cover the period from June through November and focus on helping nations prepare for, identify, and contain Ebola outbreaks more effectively.

Outlook

Health experts warn that rapid community transmission remains a serious concern. However, stronger surveillance, improved treatment capacity, and increased funding could help slow the spread of the disease.

For now, authorities in both the DRC and neighboring countries continue to intensify containment efforts while urging communities to cooperate with health measures.
