Banks in several parts of India will remain closed on Thursday, July 16, to observe regional festivals and local holidays, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday calendar for the financial year 2026-27. However, banking operations will continue as usual in the rest of the country.
The RBI declares bank holidays based on national, state-specific, and religious festivals. As a result, bank closures vary from one state to another.
Banks closed in these states today
On July 16, banks will remain closed in the following states:
- Odisha – Rath Yatra
- Uttarakhand – Harela festival
- Manipur – Kang festival
Customers in these states may not be able to access branch services during the holiday. However, banks in all other states and Union Territories will remain open and operate according to their regular schedule.
Why do banks remain closed?
The Reserve Bank of India prepares an annual holiday calendar based on several factors.
Bank holidays are announced to mark the following:
- National holidays
- Religious festivals
- State-specific celebrations
- Regional events
Apart from these holidays, banks across India remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, as well as every Sunday.
When is the next bank holiday?
According to the RBI holiday calendar, the next scheduled bank holiday falls on July 17 in Sikkim to observe the Death Anniversary of U Tirot Singh.
As with other regional holidays, banks in the rest of the country will continue functioning normally unless a local holiday has been declared.
Will online banking services remain available?
Yes. Although bank branches remain closed on notified holidays, customers can continue using most digital banking services.
Services that remain available include:
- Internet banking
- Mobile banking apps
- UPI transactions
- ATM cash withdrawals
- Fund transfers through NEFT, RTGS and IMPS (subject to system availability)
- Debit and credit card services
Customers can carry out most routine financial transactions online without visiting a bank branch.
Plan your banking activities
If you need to visit a bank branch in Odisha, Uttarakhand or Manipur, it is advisable to postpone non-urgent work until banks reopen. Customers in other parts of India can continue using both branch and digital banking services without disruption.
