The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly has passed a resolution seeking provincial status for the region

July 17, 2026: Pakistan has taken a fresh step towards granting Gilgit-Baltistan provincial status after the region’s assembly passed a joint resolution seeking recognition as the country’s fifth province. The resolution, reportedly backed by members of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and independent lawmakers, has been forwarded to Islamabad for further consideration. The development follows the June 7 regional elections, after which Amjad Hussain assumed office as Chief Minister.

According to reports, the proposed move could require a constitutional amendment in Pakistan if the federal government decides to proceed. Gilgit-Baltistan has long remained under Pakistan’s administrative control but has not been granted full provincial status under the country’s Constitution. The latest resolution also seeks parliamentary representation for the region in Pakistan’s National Assembly and Senate, marking a significant shift in Islamabad’s approach towards the territory.

The development comes amid continuing geopolitical tensions over Jammu and Kashmir, particularly following India’s 2019 decision to revoke Articles 370 and 35A. Pakistan has repeatedly criticised that decision, while India maintains that the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir, including Gilgit-Baltistan, is an integral part of the country. The latest proposal is expected to attract attention due to its constitutional, political and diplomatic implications.
