What Did He Say About The Outbreak?

As panic spread online, Moraes addressed rumours circulating on social media about a major medical emergency onboard the ship.

In a statement shared on Instagram, he clarified that:

  • He was not part of any rescue operation
  • Reports calling him a “hero” were inaccurate
  • There were currently no symptomatic passengers or crew members onboard

His comments were aimed at calming fears and correcting misinformation surrounding the situation.

What Happened On MV Hondius?

The Dutch-operated vessel had reportedly travelled from Argentina toward Antarctica before crossing the Atlantic earlier this year.

According to WHO reports:

  • Eight people linked to the ship were affected during the outbreak
  • Three passengers reportedly died
  • The vessel later continued toward Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands under medical monitoring

Khabir Moraes was among the crew members onboard during the voyage and was later safely evacuated in Tenerife.

What Is Hantavirus?

Hantavirus is a rare but potentially serious viral disease primarily spread through contact with infected rodents or exposure to contaminated droppings, urine, or saliva.

Common symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Muscle pain
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness

In severe cases, the infection can lead to dangerous respiratory complications affecting the lungs.

Health experts note that hantavirus does not spread easily from person to person, unlike COVID-19.

Why The Incident Triggered Concern

The cruise ship outbreak quickly sparked anxiety online due to lingering memories of pandemic-era cruise ship quarantines and global health emergencies.

However, medical authorities continue to emphasise that hantavirus transmission is very different from Covid-19 and is generally linked to rodent exposure rather than widespread human-to-human transmission.
