Muharram 2026 could bring a welcome three-day weekend for many students, government employees and working professionals as the holiday is expected to be observed on Friday, June 26.

According to the Central Government’s holiday calendar, June 26, 2026, has been listed as a gazetted holiday for Muharram. Since the festival falls on a Friday, it could combine with the regular Saturday and Sunday weekend, creating a long break for many across the country.

There was initial confusion regarding the holiday date, with some states announcing June 25 as the observance day. However, based on updated lunar calendar assessments and the expected date of Ashura, several states have revised their holiday schedules.

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, which had earlier declared June 25 as the Muharram holiday, have reportedly shifted the holiday to June 26. States such as Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar had already designated June 26 as the official holiday.

As a result, schools, colleges and many government offices are likely to remain closed on Friday, June 26. For institutions and workplaces that follow a five-day work week, this means a three-day weekend extending through June 28, with normal operations resuming on Monday, June 29.

However, holiday schedules may vary depending on state government notifications, educational institution policies and private company calendars. Some organisations that operate on Saturdays may have different arrangements.

People are advised to check official notifications issued by their respective state governments, schools, colleges or employers for final confirmation regarding holiday schedules.

With Muharram falling just before the weekend, many families and travellers may use the opportunity for short trips, family gatherings or personal time off.
