As global fuel uncertainties rise due to geopolitical tensions, including disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, India is exploring new ways to strengthen its energy independence. A key proposal under consideration is the large-scale use of ethanol-based cooking fuel—particularly the “Superblu” ethanol flame—as a substitute for traditional fuels like LPG and kerosene.

A Shift from Fuel Tanks to Kitchen Flames
India’s ethanol production capacity has crossed 2,000 crore litres, making it a viable domestic energy source. Traditionally used in fuel blending for vehicles, ethanol is now being positioned as a cooking fuel, especially for small food businesses like street vendors, dhabas, and local eateries.

High Efficiency and Cleaner Burning
Modern ethanol burners are proving highly efficient. Reports suggest that just one litre of ethanol can provide up to 15 hours of high-intensity heat. Unlike LPG, which requires heavy pressurised cylinders, ethanol can be stored in simple containers, making it easier to transport and handle.

Additionally, ethanol burns with a clean blue flame, producing minimal smoke or soot. This makes it a healthier alternative, particularly for vendors working in confined or poorly ventilated spaces where kerosene and biomass fuels can pose serious health risks.

Lower Costs for Small Businesses
For India’s millions of micro-food enterprises, fuel is a major expense. With commercial LPG prices around ₹103 per kg, ethanol—expected to cost about ₹70 per kg—could reduce fuel costs by nearly 30%. This cost advantage can significantly improve profit margins for small vendors and food operators.

Boosting Self-Reliance
Ethanol is primarily produced from crops like sugarcane and maize, aligning with the government’s push for an Atmanirbhar Bharat. Unlike LPG, which is tied to global oil markets, ethanol offers more stable pricing and reduced dependence on imports.

A Potential Game-Changer
If implemented at scale, ethanol-based cooking solutions like “Superblu” could reshape India’s food economy. By lowering costs, improving working conditions, and enhancing energy security, this shift may provide long-term benefits for both small businesses and the broader economy.

However, widespread adoption will depend on infrastructure, supply consistency, and safety regulations. If these challenges are addressed, ethanol could soon move from powering vehicles to fueling kitchens across India.
