Delhi Police said activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to a government hospital under Delhi High Court directions after doctors advised

July 18, 2026: Activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted from the Jantar Mantar protest site to a nearby government hospital on Friday following directions from the Delhi High Court and medical advice, Delhi Police confirmed. New Delhi DCP Sachin Sharma said Wangchuk was moved to ensure necessary medical treatment and has been placed under continuous medical supervision.

According to police, doctors assessed Wangchuk’s health after his prolonged hunger strike and advised immediate hospitalisation, warning that continued fasting could seriously affect his condition. Acting on the medical recommendation, authorities arranged his transfer to the hospital for proper monitoring and treatment.

Heavy security was deployed at Jantar Mantar during the operation, with Delhi Police, paramilitary personnel, and other security forces stationed at the protest site. Following Wangchuk’s transfer, police appealed to protesters to peacefully vacate the area. Eyewitnesses said a medical team had visited the site earlier in the day, and although Wangchuk reportedly did not initially agree to leave, authorities proceeded with the transfer due to concerns over his deteriorating health.
