Senior TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said Mamata Banerjee has agreed to Firhad Hakim’s request to resign as Kolkata Mayor
June 3, 2026: Senior Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh on Wednesday said that Firhad Hakim is set to resign as Kolkata Mayor after receiving approval from party chief Mamata Banerjee. According to Ghosh, Hakim had earlier sought permission to step down, citing difficulties in functioning after the BJP came to power in West Bengal. While his request was initially declined, Banerjee reportedly accepted it after a renewed appeal. However, an official confirmation of the resignation is still awaited.
The development comes amid growing unrest within the Trinamool Congress. Reports suggest that several councillors across municipalities have resigned in groups, while others have stopped attending office. More than 100 councillors are believed to have stepped down, raising concerns about internal stability within the ruling party.
Political tensions have intensified further following the appointment of Ritabrata Banerjee as Leader of Opposition by a group of 58 MLAs. The move follows a controversy over alleged forged signatures linked to the appointment of Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition. After objections were raised and a CID inquiry was launched, Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha were expelled from the party, deepening speculation about divisions within the TMC.
